Baby Tips and more..
You have just become a new mom - 9 months of pregnancy, hard labor and finally, delivery! Quite a feat! As soon as you look into your baby’s eyes, it is love at first sight. Then, exciting as it may be, reality slowly begins to sink in and many new moms will experience some stress or panic. Life as they knew it is over and they now have an added responsibility – the care of their newborn.
Most probably, you were enrolled in prenatal classes but now that you are on the verge of taking your baby home, you may be experiencing a little fear and uncertainty. If so, this is the time to speak up about any lingering doubts.
You may still be wondering such things as:
- Is nursing really better than bottle-feeding?
- Will I know how to care for the umbilical cord?
- Should my baby boy be circumcised?
Most hospitals have specialists available to answer all your questions.
Ask them and know that when the time comes to bring baby home, a baby health care specialist will be visiting you on a regular basis to ensure that your newborn stays healthy, is being cared for in a safe environment and is kept warm with proper clothing. Regarding clothing, you will have fun shopping for very cute baby clothes. It is easier to shop online. You may also wish to hire a nurse for baby, a live-in nanny or a responsible teenager to help out around the house until you feel that you are better equipped to manage on your own. Guilt feelings should not be part of these arrangements as you are doing what you feel is best for you, your newborn and your family.
You have already learned the basics during the prenatal classes but don’t stop there. Continue to educate yourself on how to care for your newborn. Books are a good source of information on everything from health and parenting for newborns to toddlers to teens. As well, your local Community Center may offer programs geared to helping new moms.
Include your partner in many of the more difficult decisions that you may need to take. By sharing your decision-making, you will avoid many worries. As you gradually start to feel comfortable and confident, a good routine will slowly be developing and you and everyone in your family will have more stress-free time to enjoy the baby
