Parent Guide
Parents
Have you considered what kind of a parent you are?
-Are you authoritarian and disciplinarian? You know best and want obedience.
-Are you permissive and indulgent? You have few or no guidelines because you want your child to be happy.
-Are you uninvolved? You do not really care, dismiss him and may even be neglectful.
-Are you authoritative? You care but you have structure and you are consistent.
The kind of parent you are may also be influenced by religion, culture and your own upbringing.
Did you know that there is such a thing as parenting classes? It is a good idea to take them in order to prevent serious problems later on as the child grows up. After all, education begins at home and parents not only need to keep the child healthy and safe but also instill social skills, prepare them intellectually and so on.
Children need to be shown affection and acceptance. They need a stable environment and allowed autonomy. They also need to learn the consequences of their choices, whether good or bad. All this is not as simple as it sounds and through parenting classes, one gets mentors and meets and talks to people who may be in similar situations. The cute baby boy or girl needs to learn to grow up as a good, honest and responsible adult and as a parent, it is your responsibility to start educating him/her from the time he/she is born – yes, before he/she even enters school.
What may be a normal day for an adult is a long day for a child. Many parents will dress their baby in cute baby boy clothes or baby girl clothes, takes them out all day shopping and forget that the baby or toddler can get just as tired, hungry and thirsty as they can. When this happens, parents often lose their patience and get angry.
What is this teaching the child???
When children do things that are not very nice but that may be funny, instead of disciplining them, many parents laugh instead.
What does this teach the child???
Some parents spank the child instead of punishing by putting them in the corner for a few minutes or taking away some privileges for a few hours, such as their favourite toy or T.V. show. Is spanking actually teaching the child to behave better or is it possibly making him/her hostile and aggressive???
Parents that are constantly angry and shouting at each other do not realize that it causes stress and anxiety in their children. It affects them when they try to sleep at night and it affects them in school. These children will have difficulty concentrating and learning.
From the moment that they are born, babies have their own personality. It continues to develop as they grow. Parents have a responsibility to teach their children a strong sense of morality and empathy. First, parents need to cultivate these as well.
Why not join a parenting class? There are also many books available on parenting newborns to adults. Make life a little easier on yourself, why not!
